Pioneer: Field Trip Instructions

Arrow Collect Data:
Through the following observations, you will replicate the research methods that you read about in Dr. Jane’s scrapbook. These activities can be used for chimpanzees or any of the great apes. Great apes include chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans.
Arrow Observation 1: (30 minutes)

  • Make general observations on all categories of behaviors observed. Write these observations down on regular lined notebook paper.
  • Make sure that one person is focusing on a particular individual primate and the other person is looking at the group as a whole.
Arrow Observation 2: (30 minutes)

  • Focus on the behavior topic you selected. Use the data sheet to record your observations in two-minute intervals.
  • Make sure that one person is focusing on a particular individual primate and the other person is looking at the group as a whole.
Arrow Observation 3: (time will vary)

  • Watch to see if a zookeeper introduces an enrichment activity. Also, look carefully within the exhibit for items that seem out of place. These enrichment materials may not be obvious, but it is interesting to see how the primates interact with them.
  • Focus on the behavior topic you selected. Use the data sheet to record your observations of how the primates interact with the enrichment materials.
  • Make sure that one person is focusing on a particular individual primate and the other person is looking at the group as a whole.
Arrow Observation 4: (30 minutes)

  • Animal sketching guide (under construction).
Arrow Interview a zookeeper:

  • Ask the zookeeper the questions that you and your classmates have about the primates. Additional questions you might ask include:
    • Where do the primates come from?
    • Is this a family unit or have the primates been introduced to each other?
    • Were the adult females raised by their mothers or zookeepers?
    • Do the mothers raise their infants or do zookeepers?
    • How does the zoo manage when they have too many animals or animals that cannot be kept together?
    • What kind of enrichment items do the primates seem to prefer?
