Observer: Survey of Chimpanzee Behavior

Arrow Clip 3: Meat Sharing
  • Goblin
  • Frodo, alpha male
  • Fifi
  • Infant

This clip begins with Goblin climbing a tree trunk with a part of a bushbuck, earlier stolen from a baboon. Following Goblin up the tree is Frodo (the Alpha Male) and Fifi (his mother). We can see that Fifi’s bottom is swollen.

Up in the tree branches there is some activity and we can see that Fifi now has the meat. Frodo takes the meat, breaks it in half and allows Fifi the other half. This generosity is uncommon, particularly because Frodo as the Alpha male does not have to share. It is suspected that Frodo does share with Fifi because she is his mother.

On the ground below we see an infant who was lucky enough to get a piece of hide. Although there is no meat, surely this fragment contains some scent and taste of blood and meat. Infants are terribly fascinated with hunting and try desperately to become involved. Any fragment received is a cherished possession and will likely be taken with them throughout the day and played with as a toy.
