Bilingual Research
Jane and the field staff continually revised methods of collecting data as the research progressed. Today the Tanzanian field staff conducts all the long-term monitoring of the recognized chimpanzees. Only three or four graduate students from overseas work at Gombe at any one time. Since 1975 all data have been recorded in Swahili. Checklists were generally replaced by narrative records of chimpanzee interactions kept over specific time intervals.
