A few months later, Jane set up an artificial feeding area to facilitate filming chimpanzee behavior at close range. For the first time, Jane was able to make fairly regular observations of the various individuals. The number of chimpanzees visiting the feeding area near camp gradually increased. While the feeding station offered opportunities for Jane to observe the chimpanzees and their infants closely, it was an artificial setting and a place where diseases could spread. The feeding station was removed in 2000.
