The chimpanzees gradually became accustomed or "habituated" to Jane's presence.
Watching through binoculars and writing everything in notebooks, she was able
to piece together the overall pattern of chimpanzee life. Although Jane does not
regret making contact with the chimps in the early years, it became apparent that
chimpanzees are susceptible to many human diseases, such as polio and even the
common cold. Consequently, humans must now stand ten meters away from the chimps
when observing.
