In November 1960, Jane's luck with the chimpanzees improved. She observed something really amazing. It was just after the rainy season had begun. She was walking through tall, wet grass when she saw a dark shape hunched over the golden-red earth of a termite mound. It was a male chimpanzee and he was using a grass stem as a tool. He pushed the stem carefully into one of the passages leading into the nest and waited a moment. Then he withdrew it and picked off the insects with his lips and crunched them up. Sometimes he picked a leafy stem and stripped off the leaves so that it would fit into the narrow opening. He was not only using grass stems as tools - he was actually making tools. This was an exciting observation, for up until then, it had been thought that only human beings could use and make tools.
