Resilience: Greatest Threat
Greatest Threat

Despite the fact that chimpanzees are an endangered species, their numbers continue to decline. This is due mainly to hunters killing adult chimpanzees and selling their bodies as meat for human consumption. This practice is known as the bushmeat trade, and it is occurring at such an unsustainable level that Dr. Jane and other primatologists fear it could lead to the extinction of free-living chimpanzees. Another effect of the bushmeat trade is that it leaves many young chimpanzees orphaned. The chimpanzee pictured above lives in a sanctuary with other orphans where she is able to survive with the help of human caregivers.
