Jane is a magnificent storyteller. She can tell a story or write it
down and it is just as powerful. Her first set of notes to Dr. Leakey
became the first draft of In The Shadow of Man, which became a best seller
in the 1970s. It was not until 1986 when Jane wrote a definitive work
on chimpanzees titled The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior that
she became recognized by other scientists as an authoritative voice on
the subject. Until then, she was sometimes discounted as a National Geographic
