In 1967 Jane became a mother. Her son, Hugo (nicknamed “Grub”), was raised at Gombe. To keep him safe from the chimps, Jane built a caged compound, because while chimps are fascinated with infants, they kill unfamiliar members of other groups. After years of watching mother chimps care for their infants, Jane had an opportunity to practice what she had observed.
